Libertarian from a liberal point of view. I am a strong believer in freedom of speech. A Hindu who doesn't follow any religion. Teetotalling non druggie who believes in legalization of drugs, especially pot. Do not believe in neighborhood public schools. Either open up public schools over a region or give out vouchers. I am not averse to violence but I believe in the care one must take when one embarks on such a course. My hot button issues: School reform and Iraq war. Do not believe in speeding enforcement as the primary traffic enforcement. There are enough bad drivers who speed AND commit other traffic infractions. I am not a fan of stringent airport security. Common sense security and bolt the cockpit door and let me take my chances. Find it interesting that the NRA lobby has managed to limit restrictions on guns even with access to terrorists, yet every other right seems to get choked off in the name of security including free speech. Interesting, eh? I will vote for any Democrat but Hillary in 2008. And I refuse to apologize for that choice. however I will not vote for nader either. And no way in hell will I vote for a Republican. The only way I vote for Hillary is if it is a close election in my current state of residence or if I officially join the Democratic Party to make a difference. I believe in government regulation, especially with accounting transparency, shareholder rights, environmental and monopoly related issues. Pretty much any issue that is too big for an individual to keep a corporation in check. I also believe in protecting whistleblowers which we do a terrible job of. I have no position on privatisation. If a government agency has a good track record, then its best to stay that way. Otherwise, privatise. What I do want is strict auditing of any privatised entity. This way, there is no freeloading off of the government. I dont think taxes should be raised. We should spend less money on defense and other wasteful subsidies . Spend more on domestic infrastructure and the disadvantaged citizens. But I hate it when tax increases are resorted to so easily. I am not isolationist, but I do believe in priorities. When america was at the top, sure it paid to be the big brother to others. But I believe we are in a state of such urgency that most of the resources should be spent on domestically to make the country the best in the world in many spheres such as schools. We need to repair the reputation first and once the prestige is restored, go about building progressive coalitions globally. I do not know why isolationism became a motto of right wing libertarians. What is libertarian in letting people suffer under dictatorships? That is not freedom of the individual. I am also a staunch free speech advocate. I am just aghast at the use of tasers just to shut up people who are percieved as a nuisance.
Today Daily Show tore apart Fox News and other right wing critics going after Obama and comparing him to Mao for trying to shut out FOX NEWS. They not only showed your typical collection of clips capturing FOX in contradictory position, but also Jon Stewart got to explain in clear language how hypocritical these guys are.
Whenever Obama's people try to say something in defense of their actions, they only seem to come across as clumsy. They showed Valerie Jarrett stumbling over simple easy to answer questions from Campbell Brown on FOX and MSNBC bias. Why doesn't Obama have a PR team that disseminates easy to understand cliff notes of sorts to all Obama team members by email so they know how not to be taken unawares by the press and be ready with an answer if they are good enough to come up with their own answers?
It is really not that tough. Obama and the party need to have a central resource for all Democratic Politicians to refer to when they need help or be aware of how to debunk silly criticisms of the party.
I have no problem if a senator wants to go with another solution that is not the public option. But then articulate an alternative that will help all Americans get at least basic health care.
Remember when Evan Bayh told us that we need to give Lieberman the chairmanship to prevent him from filibustering on the Democratic Party agenda(except for the Iraq war where even Democratic Party insiders always knew he was batshit insane). Not only is Lieberman not going to support the Democratic Party proposals on a public option, he is saying he will join in a filibuster.

This guy has no principles. He is bought off by the insurance and financial lobbies. His wife has a cushy paid position where she gets paid more than her market value which is an indirect form of corruption.I want all the liberal radio hosts and bloggers with any influence to demand why Evan Bayh is unwilling to back up what he said when he wanted us to be understanding of their shenanigans to get their buddy Lieberman the chairmanship.
While I am annoyed by Obama getting the Peace Prize so early in his Presidency with little track record, I am amused by some middle aged Republicans expressing outrage and derision. Where was this sentiment when Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize? THis is a guy who condoned the genocide in Bangladesh and in fact, exhibited a nasty streak to anyone who supported the ending of genocide over there.
THat's all I gotta say in this diary.
Let me get this straight. Geithner is clearly not as big a goofball or as unqualified as Michael Brown was. But why has obama given him and Summers so much importance from the beginning and seems to trust Geithner so blindly?

Former federal banking regulator William Black, who certainly hasn't stepped back from his disdain for the Obama administration's financial regulatory team, has once again singled out Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner for particular opprobrium in an interview with Newsweek.Black, an associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is perhaps best known for his work during the savings and loan crisis of the 1990s. Black points out that investigations into the S&L crisis resulted in over 1,000 convictions, while the current financial crisis -- which is much larger in scope -- has yet to yield a single conviction.
Not surprisingly, this isn't the first time Black's taken a shot at Geithner, who he's targeted for not taking a prosecutorial role in ferreting out the causes of the financial crisis. Earlier this year, he said that Geithner "has a track record of failure everywhere he's gone."
In an interview with Bill Moyers earlier this year, Black went even farther when the subject of the size of the bailouts came up. He actually accused Geithner of covering up the health of the financial system:
Has it come to this? Make an entire city downtown a ghosttown to have a summit? How is this helping Pittsburgh sell itself? Stores boarded up because of the fear of vandalism. Why even bother choosing a city to host a summit? Why not just have it in Montana, in the middle of nowhere?
There are more cops than protesters. Since when did protesters become that scary?
Michael Duvall, an Orange County, CA Republican married assemblyman was caught bragging about affairs with not just one, but two female lobbyists in the energy sector. He resigned a little while after the scandal blew up in the media. He received a 100% rating from the Capital Resource Institute

A California assemblyman is in some hot water after having a hot conversation picked up by a hot mic before a recent hearing. But he's not talking about sex with just anybody -- this is hot, steamy sex with LOBBYISTS!"So, I am getting into spanking her," says the Orange County Republican. "I like spanking her. She goes, 'I know you like spanking me.' I said, 'Yeah! Because you're such a bad girl!'"
The lobbyists reportedly represent utility companies. Duvall is vice chairman of the Utilities and Commerce Committee. Bad assemblyman!
I wrote a diary a few weeks on this same topic. I may have overreached with my rants on seatbelts since it distracted some readers from my main point of how the current TSA's policies and the meek way Americans have accepted it shows how the terrorists have won by making us a cowardly nation.
Here is an article from Patrick Smith who writes a regular column on salon.com regarding air travel. He expressed skepticism of the fluids issue in a previous article, if memory serves me right. In this one, he talks about how bags are not checked enough, and there is a greater risk to our security in those bags where explosives can be smuggled on. He makes the same point I did in my previous diary where it is actually less safe to have the TSA worry about trivial stuff like 3oz bottles , butter knives, or whatever.

Scotland freed the terminally ill Lockerbie bomber on compassionate grounds Thursday, letting the Libyan go home to die despite American pleas to show no mercy for the man responsible for the 1988 attack that killed 270 people.Announcing the release, Scotland's justice secretary insisted freeing the Pan Am Flight 103 bomber was an expression of the Scottish people's humanity -- a decision rejected by many in the U.S.
Al-Megrahi, who had served only eight years of his life sentence, was recently given only months to live after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.
SO why not just release some local thieves who are suffering from some disease or the other if the Scottish bozo wanted to show some compassion? Don't the relatives of the victims deserve some input?
